This project will investigate the in vivo efficacy of two technologies using emitting metal ions and bactericidal nanostructures. While the mechanisms of antimicrobial efficacy are expected to be substantially different, both technologies have shown bactericidal properties under in vitro conditions.It is the aim of this project to investigate the effectiveness of the identified technologies in a large animal model, identify the limitations and differences of in vitro vs in vivo testing, and conclude on the different mechanisms of antibacterial action and their applicability on intramedullary tibial implants.
